The Sensible Pencil Instructor’s Guide

The sensible pencil is a handwriting program designed to teach young children and children with special learning needs the skills necessary to be able to write.

The sensible pencil was designed to teach children to write with the highest level of success and a minimum of failure. In order to accomplish this a number of important factor were considered an incorporated into the sensible pencil

1. Prewriting : all numbers and manuscript letters are formed from 11 basic lines
2. Consistency : Instruction in the sensible pencil is consistent throughout the program. The writing language direction and models used to tech the lines, shape, letters and numbers are clean
3. Tsk analized : instruction in the sensible pencil is task analized. Sklills previously taught in one step instruction. i. e. learning to drow a vertical line. Are now taught in multiple steps progression from the most simple to the most difficult. This Progression is both systematic and developmental.
4. Process/product : focuses on how the child learn as well as on what he learn. Emphasis on the role of the child in the writng process, emphases related skills such as posture, grip, paper slant, pencil pressure and erasing.


HOW TO BEGIN………………. ?

Children come to the skill of handwriting with varying abilities. Some students will have aalready mastered beginning writing skills and even some letters. Others will be able to hold a pencil and make some mark on paper . Its important to determinane where each student is presently functioning.
1. Pretesting. The skills Assessment is the sensible pencils tool for the students present level of writing ability
2. Intructional objectives : some special education program require written instructional objectives for each student in each subject area.
3. Program Placement. The sensible pencil recommends beginning all student on the first page of the worksheets. This review will help to improve fine motor control, ability to attend to visual detail, posture and pencil grasp a highly successful experience.
